5 Interrail Routes for Spring & Summer 2022

More and more people are enjoying traveling by train in Europe. Not only is it a more ecological way of transport, it also doesn’t require additional fees for luggage, gives you the best views along the way and also gives you room to breath, walk around & relax.

In order to make your life easier, you can purchase an Interrail Pass. This allows you to travel to 33 European Countries with just the one pass. No need to research for hours to find the best connections & where to book them. Just fill in the pass & hop on your next train.

If you are interested in going on an interrailing trip, but not sure which route is best for you... I have laid out 5 different interrailing routes for you to choose from.

What’s an Interrail Pass?

An interrail pass is an international train pass which allows Europeans to travel by train across 33 European countries. If you are under 27 and or over 65 you can even get an additional discount on your pass. The interrail pass can be totally customized to your own needs. Want a country pass? That’s possible! Want full flexibility on when and where to travel? That’s possible too! Check out the different options here.

Not from Europe? You can purchase a Eurail pass, which is basically the same thing.

Mediterranean Trip

Barcelona - Nice - Milan - Florence - Rome

If you are looking for a nice classic summer in Europe trip, this one is perfect for you. You get to enjoy the Tapas in Barcelona, enjoy the beautiful weather in Nice, and travel through the heart of Italy. Whether you do this during spring break or wait until summer, you should be able to enjoy the sunshine during both trips. Due note that these are some of Europe’s most famous destinations, and thus there will be crowds everywhere. I recommend anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks for this trip, depending on how long you want to stay in each destination.

Capital Cities Hunter

London - Paris - Amsterdam - Berlin

This trip is perfect for those international travelers who are coming to Europe for the first time and want to see some of the largest cities. During the spring months the weather is still a bit iffy. Prepare for some rain, but it could also turn out to be around 20*C. Due to the close proximity of these 4 capital cities it is possible to do this trip in 2 to 3 weeks. A couple of days in each city will be more than enough.

Central European Trip

Berlin - Prague - Vienna - Budapest

If you want to see a bit more of central Europe & still enjoy the city life where you can party all night, stay in amazing hostels and meet plenty of solo travelers, this route is perfect for you. You get to see a lot of history as well as some cultural experiences. An additional bonus of this central European trip is that the prices in general are a bit lower than in the western or northern parts of the continent. This trip can be done in 2 weeks, but I recommend staying 3-4 weeks and exploring other cities along the way. (For example: Bratislava and or Krakow)

Northern Adventure

Copenhagen - Stockholm - Oslo - Bergen

Are you looking to cross of some bucket list destinations in the North without breaking the bank (too much), try interrailing Scandinavia. This trip is perfect for those who are looking for a mix of nature and cities to explore. I would recommend to do this trip in the summer rather than the spring, as there might still be a lot of rain or cloudy weather. I would recommend between 1.5 weeks - 3 weeks to see most of the highlights of the area.

Balkan Summer Trip

Ljubljana - Zagreb - Mostar - Dubrovnik - Kotor

Want a more unique & lesser traveled route? Try the Balkan Route. Start in Slovenia by exploring Ljubljana & the surrounding lakes, move on to Croatia with a stop in Bosnia Herzegovina & end your trip in Kotor, Montenegro. There will still be plenty of local travelers but a lot less international tourists who crowd up the places like in the Mediterranean trip suggestion. I suggest taking 3 to 5 weeks to visit this area. This way you get to see more local places along the interrail route.
