About Spain

Language(s): The official language of Spain is Spanish. Sme of the autonomous regions have co-official languages; like Catalan and Basque. In the larger cities English is spoken but not everywhere.

Currency: EUR - Spain is part of the Eurozone, which consists of 19 countries who use the euro as their main currency.

Transportation: There is a large developed public transport system in Spain. You can take trains between cities and use trams, buses and metros within the major cities. Uber is available in most cities.

Safety: Spain is (similarly to Western Europe) safe to visit. You do need to watch out for pickpockets and petty crimes especially in Barcelona, Madrid & other big cities. Limit the cash you carry and make sure to watch your bags on public transport / busy streets.

Climate: The climate in Spain is a (warm) Mediterranean climate.

When to visit

Spain has a hot Mediterranean climate. During the summer months, many regions of Spain become extremely hot, with temperatures well in the 40C (105F+). Therefore a better time to visit is during the spring & fall. During these months the temperatures are nice, crowds are smaller during the fall than during the spring. Winter is still a good time to visit Andalusia as the climate is still enjoyably warm. If you plan a trip during summer I suggest heading north or visit the islands where a nice breeze will cool you down.

Where to go

Spain has a lot to offer depending on your interests. Some highlights I suggest you visit are:

  • Cities: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Valencia

  • Outdoors: Northern Spain, Pueblos Blancos

  • Unique experiences: Flamenco Show, Tapas Food Tour
