5 European City Trips You Have to Take in 2021
Once the world has returned to a normal state, travel will be on the bucket list for many. As a European, I am obsessed with going on city trips. Short little weekend getaways are perfect for those who can't take many days off from work. This list has all the best places you should visit in Europe during 2021.
Berlin Germany
The first city trip I recommend anyone to take is to Berlin. The city has a lot to offer for every type of traveler. Berlin is obviously known for its rich (at times dark) history. There is no shortage of museums and cultural sights. However, if you are more into modern cities, Berlin has a huge international scene as well. There are shops, restaurants and more for everyone's taste.
I feel like Berlin is one of those cities that international travellers miss out on. They either do the London - Paris - Amsterdam route or decide to go down South. However, Berlin should not be missed. The variety in the city has something for everyone. Berlin is most beautiful in the spring or summer. But if you don't mind the cold you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the city just as much.
Porto Portugal
The area around the Douro River is beautiful all year round. Porto is the ideal city to visit if you want to enjoy this part of Portugal. Located in the northwest of Portugal, this city is famous for its wine and big bridges. The old city centre (called Ribeira - riverside) has so much culture and is super cosy. There are many local shops and small cafes ideal for tasting Portugals local cuisine.
Another thing I love about Portugal is its accessibility and cheap but efficient train system. If you are planning to take a longer city trip (1 week +) you have to check out the cities near Porto. My recommendations are: Matosinhos, Braga and Aveiro. These smaller, local towns are worth visiting, but I would not recommend staying longer than a day trip. Unless you have a lot of spare time.
Gothenburg Sweden
When thinking of Sweden, most people think of visiting the capital of Stockholm, or heading up north to discover roads less traveled on. And in doing so, many skip over this beautiful city. Gothenburg is Sweden’s 2nd largest town. The vibe in this place is very urban industrial city. However there is still a lot of green and water in Gothenburg.
If you want a nice summer holiday without dying from the heat this place will be perfect. Make sure that you visit: the Gothenburg Cathedral, the indoor Fish Market, the Haga district, the botanical gardens and so much more to see. Another famous activity is visiting the Liseberg the biggest amusement park in all of Scandinavia.
Krakow Poland
Poland is one of those countries that might not be on your bucket list but totally should be. There is so much beauty to explore. This old town near the border of the Czech Republic is know for its medieval atmosphere. It is super well preserved and it feels like stepping back a few centuries. The city is both beautiful in summer as well as winter, depending on the vibe you are looking for.
Make sure you visit some of these beautiful historic buildings, such as the Wawel Royal Castle & Cathedral, the a Krakow Barbican, St Florians gate and so many more. If you are craving some nature, head out to Ojcowski National Park or Jordan Park. If you have some extra time, make sure to head out and explore some smaller towns and nature a bit further away!
Innsbruck Austria
Looking for a winter wonderland, head towards Austria and explore the town of Innsbruck. This town is surrounded by mountains and is gorgeous when covered in a layer of snow. Although it is the 5th largest town in Austria, but still feels like a small cosy town.
Start your exploring by visiting the aldstadt (old town and later take the magical cable ride over the city. If you want a less expensive view, go to the town tower and see the city from up there. If you are in town for the Christmas markets make sure to go and enjoy some Gluwein or hot chocolate and enjoy the holiday spirit.
