10 Beautiful Spots in Limburg Belgium
When you think of visiting Belgium, your first thoughts might be to visit Brussels, Antwerp or Bruges. And whilst those places are beautiful spots, there is so much more to discover in Belgium. In this blogpost, you will find the best places to visit in Limburg Belgium.
Limburg is a province in the Flemish part of Belgium, and is located in the north east of Belgium. In Limburg, most people speak Dutch, but if you speak English don’t worry. Most people have at least a good understanding of the language, especially younger people.
There are a lot of beautiful spots in Limburg, but these 10 are some of my personal favourites. Some of these are hidden gems whilst others are a bit more known by the general public.

Alden Biesen Castle
Location: Kasteelstraat 6, 3740 Bilzen
This castle is by far one of my favourites in Limburg. It is located in the south of Limburg, right outside the town of Bilzen. This castle is surrounded by nature, which makes for a great walking trail. The grounds are a true cultural heritage of Belgium and are worth visiting when you are in the area.
Lommelse Sahara
Location: Sahara Lommel, 3920 Lommel
I know, it might not sound right, but it is. There is actually a little Sahara in Limburg. The park is about 193 hectares, and in the middle you can find a big lake. On a nice summer day it is a perfect place to relax by the water and enjoy some sunshine, food and drinks. Be sure to always clean up your stuff before you leave.
Japanese Gardens
Location: Gouverneur Verwilghensingel 23, 3500 Hasselt
A nice oasis in the middle of the capital city of Limburg is the Japanese Garden. This garden is the biggest of its kind in all of Europe. It is the perfect place to escape the busy city centre and experience a little bit of Japan in Belgium.
Reading Between The Lines
Location: Doorkijkkerk - Reading between the lines, 3840 Borgloon
The south of Limburg is known as Haspengouw, a region full of beautiful nature and little hidden gems on the side of the road. On these hikes you might just stumble upon some of these cute little buildings, like the see through mini castle. You can walk all the way up to it and go inside to take a picture. This place is beautiful to visit during sunset (or sunrise).
Helsheaven Floating Chapel
Location: Helsheaven - zwevende kapel, 3840 Borgloon
This Floating Chapel is the lesser known sister of the see through mini castle mentioned above. It is also located in the Haspengouw area and allows for a beautiful viewpoint in the middle of nature.
Cycling Through The Trees (Hechtel-Eksel)
Location: Kiefhoekstraat 16, 3940 Hechtel-Eksel
If you are looking for a bit of an adventurous getaway, you can take your bike and explore the nature of Limburg. A spot you cannot miss is the double circle structure called cycling through the trees. It is a 700m long path that can either be cycled, walked or jogged. If you are coming by car, you can park at the free parking spot (listed as the location).
TERHILLS (Maasmechelen)
Only a couple of decades ago, this area was a coal mine, but today it is transformed into one of the most beautiful spots in all of Flanders. The landscape has mountains and lakes as well as breathtaking view points. As of recently, they have decided to open the park up for free to let locals enjoy the region and get their daily exercise. Klankenbos (Neerpelt)
If you are looking for a fun day in nature with your kids, you have to go to the sound forest in Neerpelt. There are a lot of different art pieces which manipulate the sounds around you. Some of the structures are permanent whilst others are temporary exhibitions.
Cycling through Water (Genk)
This is another spot for cycling in Limburg located in Bokrijk by Genk. You can cycle or walk through a pond. Throughout the path, you will be cycling at eye level with the water. A great way to enjoy the outdoors. And if you are there, you might as well enjoy the city of Bokrijk, as it holds a lot of history.
Sint Catharina Begijnhof Tongeren
Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium. Although a lot of areas are modernised, there is still a small part of the city that takes you back a couple hundred years. The small cobblestone streets, the beguinage, and Moerenpoort show you a bit of what Tongeren used to look like. If you visit the city on a Sunday you will also be able to enjoy the antique market.
