Best Towns to Visit in the Algarve

The Algarve has become a popular holiday destination for families to retreat to in the spring and summer time. But over the past few years it has also become more and more popular with younger people to explore the area. The easiest way to see all the Algarve is by renting a car and heading up and down the coast. Alternatively, you can also explore the coast by train or bus, but this will take you a bit longer and you won’t be able to get to some of the more remote areas.

There are a few places where you can start your road trip from depending on where you are arriving from. If you are flying into the Algarve, you will most likely start in the capital of the region Faro. If you are driving from Lisbon, I’d recommend starting in Sagres.

Faro

If you are flying into the region, you will most likely start in Faro, the capital city. There is not a whole lot to see in Faro itself and found it to be one of the lesser destinations in the region. You can visit the Ria Formosa Nature Park which is known for its bird watching. My advice, rent a car from Faro and start your exploration of the general region!

Albufeira + Benagil Caves

If you are looking for a party town, Albufeira is your best bet in the south. If you want to enjoy the crazy parties make sure to stay here overnight. If partying is not your vibe, the main reason for a stop in Albufeira should be to vist the Benagil Cave. It’s possible to do this from Lagos too, however there are more tours (and cheaper ones) leaving from Albufeira. The Benagil Cave is a famous spot in the Algarve to visit, and most boat tours also take you out on the water which leaves you with a chance to spot Dolphins too!

Lagos

This town is located a bit more towards the southwest of Portugal and is one of the great places to go surfing in the Algarve. I found it to be one of the most relaxing towns which still has some cool adventure activities like kayaking tours, morning SUP sessions and surf lessons. This place is also the perfect spot to go beach hopping, watch sunsets over the cliffs and enjoy some amazing sea food.

Sagres

The final place to visit on this road trip West should be Sagres. This place is truly a surfer’s paradise. However if you don’t know how to surf it is still worth it to go visit this town as it is home to the Southwestern most point of Portugal. The fortress is the perfect place to learn about the history of Portugal, trade and exploration. There are also some amazing beaches up the coast to go and enjoy the sunset from. So make sure to check those out on the way out.
